11 - Florida Bay Dawn
Florida Bay is a large, shallow bay just off the tip of the peninsula. The sawgrass and sedges of the prairies are replaced by turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) and shoalweed (Halodule wrightii) as the marl prairie extends into the bay. Today this bay is the remnant of what was once a large ocean that covered the peninsula before receding. Ever so slowly, the bay is reclaiming the coast as sea levels rise due to global warming.
