28 - Mahogany in the Sky
|
The great West Indian mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) is one of the largest trees in the Everglades. The vast majority of the old growth trees was removed in the early twentieth century to be used in the lumber industry. The deep rich reddish wood is very dense and very strong, providing a great many uses from ship work to furniture. By the end of World War II, the Everglades would have only a few old growth trees remaining.
