03 - Purple Gallinule
|
The purple gallinule (Porphyrula martinica) is one of the most colorful birds of the Everglades. These birds, related to rails, coots, and moorhens, are often seen walking across the tops of water lilies and spatterdock supporting themselves on their long yellow toes. A bird of the Gulf Coast region, it is found exclusively in freshwater marshes and is often very secretive, taking cover in dense cattails and reeds.
